When Andrea first sets foot in the plush Manhattan offices of Runway she knows nothing. She’s never heard of the world’s most fashionable magazine, or its feared and fawned-over editor, Miranda Priestly. But she’s going to be Miranda’s assistant, a job millions of girls would die for. A year later, she knows altogether too much: That it’s a sacking offence to wear anything lower than a three-inch heel to work. But that there’s always a fresh pair of Manolos for you in the accessories cupboard. That Miranda believes Hermes scarves are disposable, and you must keep a life-time supply on hand at all times. That eight stone is fat. That you can charge cars, manicures, anything at all to the Runway account, but you must never, ever, leave your desk, or let Miranda’s coffee get cold. And that at 3 a.m. on a Sunday, when your boyfriend’s dumping you because you’re always at work, and your best friend’s just been arrested, if Miranda phones, you jump. Most of all, Andrea knows that Miranda is a monster who makes Cruella de Vil look like a fluffy bunny. But also that this is her big break, and it’s going to be worth it in the end. Isn’t it?

My Review

Oh dear! It is extremely rare that you will hear me say the film is better than the book, unfortunately in this case that is true.

The book never picked up any steam, in fact it kept at the pace of less than a gentle simmer. I stuck with it, because I just don’t like giving up on books, but I have to admit it was touch and go on a few occasions.

Andrea has to be the most annoying, selfish, self centered person ever. There is only so much moaning and whinging I can tolerate (yes I get the irony). Andrea belittles almost every character throughout the book and worst of all she treats her most loved ones with so much disrespect.

Miranda Priestly is the saving grace in this book, she is meant to be mean and demanding, and I blooming loved her character and her wit. Miranda does not beat around the bush, she has extremely high expectations but if you work for the one and only Miranda Priestly you expect that and just get on with it after all “it’s a job a million girls would die for”.

Alexander (Andrea’s Boyfriend) oh how sorry I felt for him the whole way through the book. He is completely walked all over and neglected, even worse is Andrea’s best friend Lily, now she was a lost character, who was screaming out for love and affection, to be honest I would rather read a whole book based on her character.

I didn’t really have many emotions whilst reading this book other than, am I near the end yet. Such a shame as I have been really looking forward to reading this.

If you are wanting to read this book expecting it to be like the film, honestly don’t bother wasting your time, if you want to read it, and spend most of your time being annoyed, go for it.
